Model Details
New for 2026: In the mid-1950s, the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) faced a major challenge: Growing passenger traffic demanded modern passenger cars – but the existing fleet was outdated. The solution came in the form of the rebuilt passenger car program, in which proven underframes and bogies from older cars were reused and fitted with new, robust steel superstructures. The resulting four-axle rebuilt passenger cars (B4yg) received fully welded underframes, center entrances with double doors without a central pillar, and, for the first time, reliable door seals. Thanks to their robust construction, they achieved a top speed of 120 km/h – a significant improvement over their three-axle predecessors. Between 1958 and 1959, 666 cars of the B4yg-58 type were built, supplemented by variants with 1st/2nd class and luggage compartments. In total, over 1,800 cars were thus available for modern passenger service. Although their retirement was planned for the 1980s, many vehicles remained in service until 1990.
