Even the legendary VW 181, the former Bundeswehr Kübelwagen (military utility vehicle), found its way into police fleets in many German states. This was especially true where operational areas required a certain degree of off-road capability, meaning the robust, though not all-wheel-drive, Kübelwagen was often in service well into the 1990s. WIKING miniaturized the VW 181 in the typical two-tone livery of that era, which is particularly striking due to the separately designed doors in the side view. When the VW 181 was presented at the 1969 IAA (International Motor Show), its automotive purpose was initially purely military. After European countries had planned to jointly develop a Jeep equivalent in the 1960s, but this project failed, and then the DKW Munga was also discontinued, the Bundeswehr came under pressure.
