BUSCH 25062 - Messerschmitt Bf 109 F2 "Hans von Hahn"

Hans Assi Hahn:

Hans Hahn, born on April 14, 1914 in Gotha, joined the Reichswehr as an officer candidate in the spring of 1934 at the age of 20 after graduating from the Humanistic Gymnasium Ernestinum Gotha. After completing officer training at the Munich War School in October 1935, he was promoted to Oberfähnrich and transferred to the Luftwaffe. In the spring of 1936, after successfully completing pilot training, he was promoted to lieutenant and a few days later was commanded by the 4th Squadron of the II. Group of the 134th Fighter Wing in Werl. From the beginning of November 1937 to the end of January 1939, Hahn (called "Assi") was a flight instructor and squadron commander of the 1st Squadron of the 1st Fighter Pilot School in Werneuchen. He was then promoted to Oberleutnant and transferred to the staff of I. Group of Jagdgeschwader 3 in Merseburg. Just eight months later, on October 11, he was transferred to Jagdgeschwader 2. Just a few months later, on December 15, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of the 4. Staffel of II. Gruppe in Zerbst. In the Western Campaign, Hans Hahn achieved his first two aerial victories on May 14, 1940. After twenty aerial victories in the Battle of Britain, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on September 24, 1940, and one month later he was promoted to Hauptmann and commander of III. Gruppe in Jagdgeschwader 2. On August 14, 1941, after his 42nd aerial victory, he received the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Since July 16, 1942, he was even a recipient of the German Cross in Gold. At the beginning of November 1942, "Assi" took over from Dietrich Adolf Hrabak as commander of II. Group in Jagdgeschwader 54 on the Eastern Front. At the turn of the year 1943, he was promoted to major and closed the month of January with his 100th aerial victory. On February 21, 1943, Hahn was less fortunate. He was forced to make an emergency landing in his Messerschmitt near Demjansk (south of Salutsche) due to damage to the left wing and engine failure, and was taken prisoner of war by the Soviets. After his release from captivity in December 1949, he returned to Germany and worked for the foreign department of Bayer AG in France and England. After moving to Wano Schwarzpulver GmbH in Kunigunde near Goslar, where he served as the company's director, he retired in 1977 and initially lived with his family in the south of France. On December 18, 1982, Hans Hahn died in Munich.
