Model Details

“Goods belong on the rails.” This well-known advertising slogan of the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) was taken for granted before the Second World War. Nevertheless, industry had already developed efficient trucks capable of transporting heavy loads. The Reichsbahn (German State Railway) wanted to benefit from this cost-effective means of transport on the rails as well. Thus, they procured standard production trucks from various well-known manufacturers, which ran on rail wheels. These included numerous models from the catalog of Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik AG (VOMAG), which was one of the major truck manufacturers at the time. In addition to construction service tasks, the distinctive “long-nosed” trucks were also intended for light shunting duties. For this purpose, buffer beams and coupling devices were installed at the front and rear. Otherwise, there were hardly any modifications, and therefore these vehicles only had a reverse gear. This limited the turning radius, or a turntable had to be found to change direction. Several rail trucks were coupled together at their rear ends to allow for more flexible deployment. And some "VOMAGs" even made it into the fleet of the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn). Painted in a smart red, they ran in the construction service of the Hamburg division until around 1960. On a model railway, such a vehicle is a real eye-catcher – especially when it's pulling a freight car.
