Merten figures have been among the best-known miniature figures in the model railway sector for decades. The company was founded in 1952 in Berlin as Walter Merten, Toy Manufacturing and initially produced metal figures for Gauge 0 and H0 before starting the production of plastic figures in 1956 – a milestone that made Merten a leading supplier of miniature sculptures.
Even early on, the product range included railway personnel, travelers, passers-by, animals, rural scenes, but also unusual scenes such as garden gnomes, pirates, or beach figures, which were among the brand's distinctive features. Merten offered figures for the most important gauges H0 (1:87), TT (1:120), N (1:160) and Z (1:220), thus covering almost every layout theme – urban, rural, historical or modern. In the 1990s, Merten was acquired by the Preiser company, which continues the 'Merten by Preiser' line to this day. Since then, the models have benefited from improved painting quality while still remaining recognizable as an independent brand. Merten is still known for hand-painted miniature sculptures based on reworked molds and executed with meticulous attention to detail. The current program encompasses a wide range of everyday scenes, professions, railway personnel, animals, children's and leisure scenes, as well as thematic sets such as East German police, fire brigade, industrial workers, or kindergarten. This diversity makes Merten a popular manufacturer for creating realistic and vibrant model railways and dioramas. In short: Merten figures stand for attention to detail, character, diversity, and craftsmanship – and have been enhancing model railway worlds with expressive miniatures for over 70 years.
