A Long, Strenuous RouteA marathon is a special challenge for athletes. Here, the athletes have to run 42 kilometers (20 miles) without stopping. Many marathon runners train for such an event for an entire year. They must be consistently fit to achieve this goal. Legend has it that in ancient Greece, during a battle, a messenger ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the Athenian victory. This was approximately 40 kilometers (20 miles). Upon arriving in Athens, this messenger collapsed and died.
