LAGGIES Helix - Construction CircleThe construction circle in HO scale with a track radius of 360/437.5 mm, for single or double track.
Each helix can be built with a right-hand or left-hand incline. The complete kit includes all necessary supports, track segments, and detailed assembly instructions. A base circle is required for each helix. The number of construction circles needed depends on the height you wish to bridge.
What exactly is a helix? A helix is a spiral track in which a train travels from one level to a lower or higher level. The train travels downwards or upwards within the helix. The helix has the same gradient at every point, allowing even long trains to easily overcome significant height differences.
When is a helix needed? The applications are very diverse. Here are some examples:
To reach a lower or higher level.
To access a hidden staging yard below the layout.
To connect two layouts at different heights.
How is it ensured that the trains do not derail in the curves of the helix? The outer curves of the helix are superelevated by 3 mm. This significantly improves running safety and reduces rolling resistance.
What versions of LAGGIES helixes are available? Helixes are offered for H0 and N gauges – precisely adapted to the specific requirements of each railway manufacturer. All helixes can be built with either a left- or right-hand incline.
How can I bridge larger height differences with a helix? A so-called base circle is required for every helix. This base circle includes the entrance to and exit from the helix. Any number of extension circles can be placed on top of this base circle – depending on the height difference the train needs to overcome.
The base circle: The base circle comprises 1 1/2 circles. A single base circle provides the necessary clearance height as well as entry and exit points. The extension circle: The extension circle comprises a full circle. Any number of extension circles can be placed on top of a base circle. This allows even the greatest height differences to be easily overcome in a very small space.
What does the LAGGIES track helix consist of? The kit includes precisely milled track segments made of 4 mm thick plywood and cleverly designed, interlocking stands and brackets.
