BUSCH 40006 - Benz Patent Motor Car with Advertising Column

Carl Benz, born on November 25, 1844, in Karlsruhe, was able to set up his own small mechanical workshop in Mannheim in 1872, thanks to the support of his father-in-law. In this "tinkerer's workshop," he initially developed an internal combustion engine that could be powered by petroleum (a gas mixture) instead of gas. With the help of interested investors, production of the two-stroke "System Benz" engine began in 1881. As early as 1885, the first three-wheeled motor vehicle powered by a four-stroke internal combustion engine was built. The gas-powered vehicle was patented by the Imperial Patent Office on January 29, 1886, with the number 37435. Carl Benz in Mannheim, Gottlieb Daimler, and Wilhelm Maybach in Cannstatt, implemented their ideas on the drawing board. Prototypes were created in the workshops, which were continually tested and improved. Carl Benz paid particular attention to the ignition of his single-cylinder engine.

The Benz spark plugs of 1886 already met the standards in design and material that were valid until the 1930s. Between 1886 and 1894, approximately 25 examples of a further development of the Patent Motor Car were sold. The price was 3,000 marks.
