Herpa 019040-001 - Lufthansa Junkers Ju-52Model DetailsThe D-AQUI is a legend not only in its original form. As a Herpa model in 1:160 scale, it has been a near-continuous part of the Herpa Wings product range since its inception. It received its first registration as D-AQUI on April 6, 1936, and flew for Deutsche Luft Hansa, with a brief interruption, until 1945. After the end of World War II, it continued to operate commercially in Norway until the mid-1950s, before being sold to Ecuador. There, it carried passengers and cargo for several more years until it was parked in Quito in 1962. A few years later, American private collectors discovered the wreckage, renovated the aircraft, and presented the Ju-52 at airshows as "Iron Annie." Finally, in 1984, Lufthansa acquired the aircraft to restore it for its upcoming 60th anniversary celebration. Until 2018, the "Aunt Ju" thrilled thousands of spectators at airshows and more than 1,000 passengers on sightseeing flights over Germany, before being put into storage in 2019. With 17 aircraft, Germany's largest airline was one of the largest operators of the Airbus A340-600. During the coronavirus pandemic, the end seemed sealed. But when demand quickly rose again after the lockdowns ended – faster than new aircraft could be produced and added to the fleet – Lufthansa decided to reactivate ten examples of the 75-meter-long aircraft. Herpa 534420 - B787-10 Etihad, GreenlinerModel DetailsBecause Airbus needed additional cargo capacity, especially for series production of the A350 XWB, and the heavily used Beluga fleet was also getting on in years, the aircraft manufacturer began studies to develop a successor model in the early 2010s, which led to concrete plans starting in 2014. The choice fell on the A330-200F as the basis for the new parts transporter, with the short runways at Hawarden Airport in Wales and Bremen Airport in particular tipping the scales in favor of the smaller A330 variant. At 63 meters long and 19 meters high, the Beluga XL is a good six meters longer than its predecessor, the A300-600ST, has a 1.1 meter wider fuselage, and a cargo volume of 2,209 m³ that is almost 1,000 m³ larger. This was precisely what was crucial for being able to transport two wings instead of just one of an A350 in the future, for example. Externally, the XL is most easily recognizable by its "smile," which further enhances the whale's appearance. F-GXLI entered service in October 2020 as the third of currently six BelugaXL transporters.
